If your income qualifies you for a subsidy
Buy on HealthCare.gov. The premium tax credit is the single largest discount available to anyone, and self-employed income is what counts — after business expenses. Many solo business owners in your state qualify and don't realize it because they estimated income before deductions.
If you're above the subsidy line and healthy
This is the group private shared-network plans were built for. A PPO on the Cigna, Aetna and PHCS PPO network, priced on your health rather than your income, usually costs 30–50% less than a full-price marketplace plan and lets you see any in-network doctor in any state without referrals. For self-employed people who travel or have clients across state lines, that portability matters.
